A State-of-the-art Community Research Laboratory
ASDRP and CAS are proud to provide students with a state-of-the-art laboratory. ASDRP (during the summer) and CAS (during the school year) are completely separate programs, but use the same research facility. Our lab is better equipped than many biotech or university laboratories: we provide over $1 million worth of advanced apparatus. The equipment and lab space we provide to students cannot be found anywhere else outside of professional laboratories.
Our facilities lie within the Warm Springs Innovation District in Fremont: our space was previously occupied by a drug discovery company, and our neighbors are all biotech companies. We are located at 46307 Warm Springs Blvd, Fremont, CA 94539. This location is very convenient, featuring an array of restaurants, stores, cafes, boba shops, and more right across the street.

The lab space that houses the following research-grade instrumentation and equipment, which represent over $1M worth of apparatus:

Instrumentation & Equipment
Nanalysis NMReady 60e 60 MHz Nuclear Magnetic Resonsnace (NMR) Spectrometer
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance is a powerful spectroscopic method that utilizes a magnetic field to elucidate the electronic structure around individual nuclei, giving insight into absolute molecular structure

Bio-Rad SmartSpec 3000 UV-visible Spectrophotometer
Our Bio-Rad UV-visible spectrophotometer has a wavelength range of 200 nm to 800 nm, and is capable of analytical methods such as protein / nucleic acid quantification, time-resolved absorbance kinetics, multi-wavelength scans, and spectrophotometric biochemical assays.

High-Throughput Computing Cluster & Server System
We are proud to operate two industry -grade servers for computational research, equipped with a state-of-the-art 24 core Xeon processor system, 64 GB RAM memory, and 4 TB drive memory.

Thunder Optics UV-near IR Emission Spectrometer
Our UV-to-near-IR spectrometer measures light emission at various wavelengths, from 190 nm to 1050 nm. Our students and researchers use the spectrometer frequently to quantify fluorescent quantum yield or to obtain near-IR vibrational spectra.

Dynex Opsys Fluorescence and Absorbance Microplate Reader
Like the Thermo Multiskan, our Dynex Opsys Microplate reader rapidly measures up to 96 samples at a time, recording UV-visible absorbance spectra or fluorescence.

Princeton Applied Research Scanning Potentiostat
Our PAR Model 362 analytical three-way potentiostat is a research-grade instrument used for electrochemical measurements, cyclic voltammetry, and characterization of redox-active species in solution.

Chai Biotechnologies OpenPCR Thermal Cycler for PCR
The OpenPCR Thermal Cycler is a benchtop instrument capable of rapid and precise temperature modulation for polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Our research students use this for DNA/RNA amplification, nucleic acids quantification, and analytical genetics.

Eppendorf Benchtop Thermomixer R
The Eppendorf Thermomixer R is capable of shaking and modulating the temperature of twenty-four samples at a time. This piece of equipment is heavily use by students working in microbiology, biochemistry, etc.

ROBO R1 3D Printer
The ROBO R1 3D pinter is used by research students for various purposes, from creating scale models, designing parts and components for engineering projects, etc.

Thermo Scientific Nicolet iS5 Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) Spectrometer
Infrared spectroscopy is used for characterization of substances by their absorbance of electromagnetic radiation in the infrared range, which corresponds with rotational and vibrational frequencies of a particular compound. Our FT-IR system is equipped with an iD5 diamond attenuated total reflectance (ATR) sample assembly.

Bausch & Lomb Spec20 UV-Visible Spectrophotometer
UV-visible spectrophotometers provide information about absorbance and transmittance of light in the ultraviolet to visible range at a variety of wavelengths through a given sample. We are equipped with three single-beam near-UV-visible spectrophotometers.

Thermo Scientific Multiskan 96-well plate Reader
Our Multiskan FC microplate reader records absorbance or fluoresence data from up to 96 samples at once, allowing our research to utilize high-throughput screening.

Hoefer Scientific Fluorometer
The Hoefer TKO100 DNA fluorometer measures fluoresence of a sample of DNA or other biochemical material.

Rotary Evaporator
The "Rotavap" removes solvent from a mixture by using a warm water bath and reduced pressure from a vacuum pump. It is heavily used by researchers who need to purify their compound from organic solvent.

LabLine Instruments Incubated Shaker
Our incubated shaker allows biology researchers to grow up to four liters of bacteria cell culture at a time for protein expression, genetic analysis, etc.
